Burgundy’s famous French wine – Chablis grand cru
The Chablis grand cru vineyards are located in the north of the Burgundy wine region, on the right bank of the Serein river. Just seven vineyards qualify for the prestigious Chablis grand cru (great growth) status, the top designation in the famous French wine classification system. Made from the Chardonnay grape, Chablis grand cru wines are all white and combine characteristic flintiness – derived from the local clay and chalk soil – with mellow buttery and honeyed notes.
Vin de Pays d’Oc – gluggable famous French wine from the South of France
For lower priced excellence, turn to the famous French wine of the South of France, such as Vin de Pays d’Oc. Some 3.5 million hectolitres of red, white and rosé single varietal or blended Vin de Pays d’Oc are produced annually in the sun-baked Languedoc-Roussillon region. To qualify for Vin de Pays d’Oc status, wine must be produced within the region and from approved grape varieties, such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernet-Sauvignon, as well as meeting specified analytical and tasting standards.
